Index 14

It is clear that many of the ills that plague our lives today stem from a lack of self-discipline. Besides obesity, drunkenness and incurable or dangerous diseases, poor self-control also leads to crime, dropping out of school, intense frustration with one's lot in life and gangsterism. All these ills affect not only the individual involved but loved ones and society at large as well.

Education plays an important role in instilling discipline. Students learn that they have to adhere to rules and obey their teachers and in every aspect of school life, self-discipline is reinforced. And thus, I agree that the school should become a place of discipline.

To begin with, now a day the students are rude towards teachers when the teachers were teaching in class. They interrupt the lesson by talking to classmates, not paying attention, shouting and walking around without teacher's permission.

Secondly, they did not obey the school rules- they alter their skirts or pants to a shorter length, tuck out their shirts, wear ankle socks, dye their hair and wear accessories.

Also, they dare to talk back to teachers even knowing its their fault. They fight in as a gang outside and smoke which ruins the school reputation.

On the other hand, the students are not allowed to ask questions , they will not be able to clarify their mistakes. Thus, their grades will drop.

And, if the discipline is too oppressive, the students will have less freedom though school is a place for them to learn, play and know more about the society. As a result, they will tend to repel due to the less freedom they have in school.

Furthermore, they will end up hating school and will not be attending school since the discipline is very strict to them and this will ruin their future.

Self-discipline is an important prerequisite for success in life. Without it, one's health and personal well-being as well as the well-being of our society will be at stake thus, school should become a place of discipline.

I think that the school is a place of discipline as it help us to be ready in the social . The school bring us to be on the right track . The school teach us some values of life . We study in school to have a good future . Teachers scold us are for our own good . Example of bring us to have a good future : studying well and having discipline in our doing . Discipline is needing in school as if there is no discipline in school , we cannot focus in lesson . A school can be enjoyable if there sufficient discipline and not too much discipline . Too much discipline will make the lesson boring and very hard to focus . If there is not enough discipline , it will be too noisy and very hard to focus. But school is not the only place with discipline , everywhere is a place with discipline . We have to have discipline with our action everywhere. At last , discipline is the important values in life so we need to have discipline in our life.

The school is a place where we gain new knowledge and life-long skills. Although discipline is important, I disagree that school should be a place of discipline.

Firstly, school should be a place of fundamental education and not a place of discipline as having fun and being creative is the best way to learn. Too much discipline would stifle students' imagination. Being able to think out of the box, students might be able to discover their potential in themselves. Also, it encourages students to be more outspoken and confident of themselves. In addition, they would also focus better on learning without worrying whether their hair or uniforms are in the right place.

Secondly, disciplinary actions are getting more strict. Be it verbal scoldings or physical actions, it will definitely affect the student one way or another. An ideal studying environment should not be like this at all. It might pressurize a student and might cause a student to be afraid and therefore play truant.

However, on the other hand teens these days are getting more rebellious. They are also easily affected by peer pressure and are also easily influenced by everybody around them. They might pick up bad habits and perhaps choose the wrong path in life. To add on, some parents are too busy with work to discipline their children and eventually neglect them. At such a young age, some students are not able to think for themselves yet. If parents and the school do not discipline their students, no one would be able to guide the students at this age.

Also, imagine if the school would to be a place with no discipline at all. There would be disrespectful, rowdy and disruptive students. They would disrupt lessons and also be defiant towards teachers. Profanities would be abused by students and fights would definitely happen. How would foreigners think of Singapore's schools?

As such, school should consist of discipline and also fun and creative learning. However, schools should not focus on discipline too much but instead focus on nurturing students into capable leaders of the future.

This is a very well done piece of work by two of your classmates. Apart from some slight grammar errors, this is something like what I'll like to see from those who have not submitted yet.

Topic: the school should become a place of discipline. What are your views?

School is a place where we learn life long skills. School is also considered our second home. Some people think that school should be a place of discipline. I disagree.

To begin with, the school is a environment specially made for students to think out of the box. It also stretches their talents with the variety of CCA. If a school becomes a sight of discipline, students would be more worried about their ankle socks then their studies.

Secondly, the punishment for mischief in school is getting hasher. Teachers are canning students. They are inflicting physical injuries. This outrages parents. Does a learning environment consist of students caned behind close doors?

However on there other hand, the generations are getting more and more rebellious as time progresses. They are also open to more distractions such as computer games and peer pressure. It does not hurt to have a little discipline every once in a while.

In addition, some students will not learn if they are not disciplined. Imagine if the parents do not discipline their child, who would discipline them? If no one disciplines them, they would affect the reputation here. Parents overseas would not want their child to come to Singapore to study.

Therefore in conclusion, school can be and must consist of discipline. But it doesn’t mean that school should focus on discipline. The will-being of students is also important.

Yes, we think that school should be a place of discipline but not with harsh punishments.

First of all, without any disciplinary action taken by the teachers; there will be no difference between schools and the streets. We are supposed to be the one who try our best listening attentively to the teacher. When we interrupted the teachers’ lectures it means that we are wasting our own time. So when a teacher disciplined us it is actually a good thing, because you can always reflect back what your mistake is after that.

Secondly, disciplinary action is the only hope that good students could have. They wish noisy students to be quiet but if they do not keep silence in class room, students have to rely on teachers' disciplinary action for bad students.

Lastly, the school should be a place of discipline as students spend most of the day in school, and also in singapore students spend 6 years in primary school,4 or 5 years in secondary school and about 2 to 3 years in poly,jc so discipline is very important during these years in their life.what a student learns in school and theirdiscipline will affect their life as they grow up. if teachers do not disicpline the students in their early stage of life, they will tend to stray and might get into trouble with the law.
and also the values taught in school will help a student in their life.

However, disciplinary action may be a good think but it is not the thing for me. If a teacher is scolding the whole class, does not it mean that it is wasting more time? School is a place for learning. If all teachers spent too much time scolding us, the school will not be a conducive place of learning anymore.

Second of all, teachers' disciplinary actions are too harsh for the young students. They give students detentions which takes students up around 4 hours. While students are detained, they are ordered to copy the whole school rules. They have their own time to meet mates after school hours and have tuitions for school subjects but teachers ignore their own time and waste each student's precious 4 hours.

I lastly think that a school is a place where students have fun, make friends and become a better person.
for a student to have fun, make friends and be a better person the student must not be too stressed or be in a controlled environment.and too much discipline will stress a student such that they may not perform well in school.school is where ideas are created and goals are achieved so a school should not be place of discipline but a lace of fun and happiness

As conclude, think that discipline in school is very important as students spend most of their time in school and students learn better when they are with their friends.

In school, we play, study, learn new things, have lots of fun, do projects, group works, make friends, get our bounding stronger, help one another and more. We have done our part to go to school and study rather than going to play everyday. We learn many things in school and we were serious in studies but sometimes we need to have fun and relax instead of being stressed up for school work. We should have equal time for playing as well as being serious and doing work. And thus i disagree that the school should become a site of discipline. School is like our home and the teachers and our friends care for us.
Firstly, we have many things to learn and have many homeworks and in addition to that, we also have tuition and tuition homeworks too so we should be handing in our work later. However, sometimes, students just slack and therefore hand their homework in late and give their excuse as they had many tuition homeworks.
Secondly, on field trips out of school, we should be able to roam around as most of the time of field trips is after school. As such, field trips are for us to relax and learn the outside world. Although if we roam around ourselves, we might get lost. Some students do not know how to take care of themselves, so if they did not watch out for vehicles when crossing roads, they would get hit by the vehicles.
Thirdly, we go to school to have fun
Lastly, i conclude that we go to school to have fun and therefore school should not become a site of discipline.

School is a place for studying, playing and fun and laughter.School is like a second house to us and a place to gain more knowledge. It is also a place for us to make new and caring friends and even good teachers. But,we would still disagree that discipline in school is important, yet we should still have fun but not forgeting the discipline in school.
To begin,we will first talk about the rules that should be implant into the school.Rules such as Discipline,Behaviour and many more others.Without these rules,we are sure that we cannot concentrate in studying. Also, the problem we face are conflicting with teachers, the students will be stress when facing the teachers.
If we cannot get along with our teachers,we would not concentrate what our teacher is teaching. Thus, this will result in getting low marks for our upcoming examination.Even if our teacher discipline us,some of us might not change for the better. So if disciplinary does not work, the only way is to bond our relationship with the teachers.
If our relationship with the teachers are good,we would understand how difficult it is to teach us.Thus,we would change over a new leaf for our teachers and start paying attention to what the teacher is teaching. In time to come, our results will be better.

School is a place for us to study, make friends, and enjoy. We, as students, spent most of the time in school. So, we disagree that the school should become a site of discipline. Firstly, though it helps to control pupils that are mischievous, they should also seek for permission from their parents.
Secondly, although without discipline, the school will be in a chaos and thus, denting the reputation of the school. In our views, we allow abusive any discipline method only if the parents allow. Thirdly, if we do not emphasising on discipline, it will also result in rowdy classrooms and disrupted lessons. Fourthly, we, as students, have to be discipline so that we would not be involve in any distruption of lessons. So that every lesson would be a knowledgeable one.
Lastly, the teachers in school are not the parents of the student, so they can't use any abusive discipline method on the student. If they want to discipline the student, they must call the student's parent to allow them to use this method.
To conclude, we disagree that the school to use abusive discipline methods to discipline the students in school, students should also be discipline. Thank you !

Expository Essay Length

Dear all, please note that the expository essay is considered a full length written work. It should be about 200-300 words in length and not in point form. Thanks.

index number 16 & 19

Our learning journey begins in the school, satisfying our thirst for knowledge
on a higher level and at a less constraining manner. Thus, i disagree that the
school should become a site of discipline.
To begin with, by constraining the students freedom, it will increase the risk of students
having conflict with the teachers. Consequently, students will be facing stress and are
unable to focus in class.
Secondly, in our opinions, the knowledge we gained are supposed to be learned in a more innovative manner and should have more room for individual expressions. Furthermore,
by learning creatively, it allows students to discover their hidden potentials. However, on the other hand, without any emphasising on discipline, it will also result in rowdy classrooms and disrupted lessons. So, at the end of the day, students will not learn anything fruitful.
In addition, students will be too carefree and might influenced their studies. Therefore, in conclusion, a strong balance is needed to unleash their full potential in their studies. Even though giving students space is important but maintaining order and discipline is also equally significant. So in summary, the school is like our second home and so shouldn't be dreaded as a site of discipline.

Group 2 ( 8 & 20 )

School is a place where we work, study and play. It is a place where we spend long hours to nurture our creativity and minds.
Firstly, discipline is obviously essential in school as it helps to control pupils that are mischievous and pupils who need extra help.
In our views, although discipline is essential, but it should not be enforce too much. All students do not like discipline as they want to be carefree and do whatever they want without having to bear the consequences.
Thirdly, without discipline, the school will be in a chaos and thus, denting the reputation of the school. In another hand, without discipline, the pupils maybe more happy and concentrate better and enabling them to score better in their exams and tests.
Lastly, students might think that teachers had placed their trust in them and thus, turning over a new leaf.
To conclude, we agree that a school should be a place of discipline.

Ms Leong's Journal Entry

Sample Journal Entry by me.

Topic: If I could live anywhere in the world, where would I live?

If I could live anywhere in the world, I would love to live somewhere where I can see open skies and green fields and maybe a freshwater lake so clear that on good days I can see white clouds reflected in it. It would be a place that is peaceful, where the neighbours are quiet and I can read my book in peace. The weather will not be too warm, but not too cold either, since I can't take extreme climate conditions. Too warm - and I'll perspire and suffer from heat rash, though if it's too cold, my skin will dry out terribly.

Too often, living in a city, we forget that we only see slivers of the sky since most of it has been blocked by tall buildings. If you have been to the CBD, you'll know what I mean when I say that a person can feel truly dwarfed by the skyscrapers all around and you end up with the sensation of being trapped.

While I wish I can stay in Singapore, which is my first home, and will always have a special place in my heart, I wish to have my cake and eat it too. As such, if I could, I would have a home in a variety of places which differ from that of Singapore's, so that I may benefit from experiencing many different lifestyles.

Additional notes for Expository Essay

An expository essay is argumentative in nature. You need to present both sides of an argument.

Formatting matters:

Introduction: State your opinion.
E.g. The school is the place where we go to acquire new knowledge and skills. Although discipline is needed to enforce order so that everyone gets to learn, I disagree to a large extent that schools should become a place of discipline. This is because knowledge is gained when we students are allowed to learn creatively, with more room for innovation and individual expression.

Argument for:
THIS IS IMPORTANT:
When I say "argument for", I mean the argument supporting YOUR OPINION/STAND, and not the topic sentence.
E.g. Firstly, being able to learn creatively allows students to explore their own potential talent.

However, no discipline will only result in rowdy classrooms. Lessons will be constantly disrupted and students will not learn anything fruitful...
